POSITION OVERVIEW
The role of a Senior Legal Counsel at Hickory is pivotal in ensuring comprehensive legal oversight and guidance within the construction and property development domain.  The Senior Legal Counsel plays a central role in safeguarding legal compliance, mitigating risks and strategically advising Hickory. Their primary objectives include overseeing contract management and negotiations across all facets of Hickory’s business operations including, conducting in-depth legal negotiations on construction head contracts and primary subcontracts, due diligence and structuring for property acquisitions and developments, commercial (including M&A) transactions and ensuring strict adherence to regulatory requirements and compliance standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts including property acquisitions, construction agreements, contracts of sale, and commercial transactions.
  • Conduct due diligence for property, commercial, and investment transactions, identifying legal risks and ensuring compliance.
  • Advise project teams and senior leadership on regulatory compliance, legal risks, and strategic matters across all phases of development and construction.
  • Lead contract negotiations with developers, subcontractors, and financiers, and manage contract amendments and disputes.
  • Oversee and manage litigation, dispute resolution, and engagement with external counsel to protect Hickory’s interests.
  • Develop and implement compliance frameworks, governance policies, and internal procedures aligned with legal obligations and industry standards.
  • Support construction and development teams on zoning, environmental regulations, insurance, and building code compliance.
  • Manage legal matters related to intellectual property, policy development, legal research, and risk management.
  • Mentor junior legal team members, delegate tasks effectively, and contribute to departmental and organisational strategy.

 

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE ROLE
  • Law Degree (LLB/JD)
  • Legal practicing certificate
  • 8-10 years of post-admission legal practice experience, with a significant portion dedicated specifically to construction law, property development law or related areas
  • Previous experience in an in-house legal department or a corporate setting, ideally within the construction or property development industry
  • Proven experience in negotiating and drafting a wide array of contracts related to property development, construction, finance agreements, leases, etc
  • Demonstrated expertise in ensuring compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to property development, construction, land use and zoning regulations
  • Hands-on experience in managing legal disputes, litigation, mediation and negotiations related to construction and property development matters
