In mid-2013 Hickory was awarded its first education project, a new learning centre for Duffy Primary School in the ACT. The prefabricated project utilised a new form of Hickory structural technology, employing a “chassis” style structure, rather than the conventional UB monocoque system Hickory had been using, in order to achieve the open plan layout.

Hickory was the subcontractor to FM Projects – awarded the school project by the ACT Government, and the project comprises 10 prefabricated modules and education facility fit out.

The extensive 590 square metre learning centre was a new addition to the established primary school, and features many unique functional and design elements.

Once inside, the fit-out includes a learning centre, breakout areas, teacher spaces and practical activity areas. Magnetic, markable wall panels integrate the building with the interactive learning environment. Produced in August and transported to the ACT for installation during November 2013, Duffy Primary was a pivotal demonstration project for Hickory to showcase our capability to innovatively service the education sector.

NOTE: Since successfully delivering this project Hickory have adjusted our delivery model to now focus on high-rise projects using conventional and Hickory Building Systems construction methods.

The timber deck-covered entry makes use of patterned glass bi-folds that when opened work to convert the space into a hybrid indoor-outdoor environment.

Bi-fold feature art screens, detailed with playful graphic designs also enhance the exterior aesthetic.

The aluminium-composite panel clad façade is shaded in neutral tones, and highlighted with external multi-coloured feature walls.
