Featured in WAMN: High Rise Housing Takes Shape in 10 Days

A brand new construction method has successfully built a block of apartments in Perth in 10 days.

The design allows different parts of the building to come together like Lego blocks, erecting 15 units each day. The entire housing project can be completed and ready to sell in 12 months.

A 77-home six-storey building was constructed with the modular housing system. It can save up to 12% in costs and reduces construction time by 50%.

The $22 million building is part of the Adara Apartment project in Cockburn Central, which aims to increase the amount of affordable housing in WA.

Housing Minister Bill Marmion inspected the building site this morning. He believes the method marks the future of construction and encourages other companies to use this method.

“What we are trying to achieve is another quality product but at a cheaper price. It’s affordable for people so they can realise their dream of home ownership,” Mr Marmion said.

“… I encourage builders to use this technique if they want to provide affordable apartments to West Australians.”

Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute research fellow Jemma Green also toured the building site along with the Housing Minister.

Ms Green was impressed with the high quality completion of the building and said the design can lower energy use.

“I think modular offers so many benefits from time, cost and sustainability performance. For example, this building was constructed in between 9 to 11 months, where conventionally it will take up to two years,” Ms Green said.

“… The thermal performance of the building is actually exceptional, it’s 30 percent more thermally efficient than conventional building. That means you can turn your air-conditioning on less often, or your heater on less often as well.”

The Adara Apartments are located behind the Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre, close to the Cockburn train station and the Kwinana Freeway.

The housing project is 20 minutes away from Perth CBD and less than 10 minutes away from Murdoch University and Fiona Stanley Hospital.
